ROME WITH A VIEW

An international design competition for a combined pedestrian and public transport bridge across the River Tiber in Rome has been won by structural engineer Buro Happold. The winning design, which beat 103 other entries, features inward leaning steel arches and a steel deck and is estimated to cost $3.4M. Work is due to begin early next year. When open, the new crossing, dubbed Ponte della Musica, will improve access to Rome's rapidly developing Flaminio area.
