Rock and a hard place

Two news items (NCE 22 March) caught my eye. On page five you report Foot and mouth throws rail maintenance into chaos and on page six that the rail regulator has given Railtrack two months to finish its post Hatfield track repair and replacement programme.

Railtrack just cannot win. It must be bad enough in normal times obtaining agreement with four or five train operators for a line closure to allow track relaying. At the same time it is being criticised by the public, the media, the rail regulator and John Prescott for train delays.

It cannot be easy working for Railtrack.
