ROAD TO RECOVERY: Stabilisation of the World Trade Center (WTC) basement in New York is expected to be finished as early as June, engineers at Ground Zero estimate.
Port Authority of New York engineering programme manager Peter Rinaldi said that 1.1Mt of an estimated 1.5Mt of debris had been removed to the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island and nearly half of the planned 700 tie backs needed to stabilise the retaining walls surrounding the basement had been installed. But he stressed that the situation could change. Stabilisation relies on recovery progress and in turn recovery work is being guided to some extent by the progress of tie back installation. Work has been helped by New York's unusually warm and dry winter, which has meant that construction delays normally experienced have not transpired.
