  • Comment on: Employers let down by new recruits

I tend to agree with Ivanka; Uni is just a gym for the mind.
I would like to know the number of undergrads that get a placement during the summer.
If it wasn't for my old man I wouldn't have stood a chance of getting a placment; a very valuable insite into how things work on site. More placements would mean more grads with a better clue as to how things are set up when they get into industry full time.
But on the positive side, employers have a 'clean slate' and can easily say to grads that this is the company m.o. and this is the way things are, which makes it so easy to 'sell'.
The other way of looking at things on the sarcastic side is if the student is that clued in on the 'industry', they'd run a mile. :) (from the point of view of having bosses that have had no management training and companies that are a bit disorganised from the perspective of the graduate.

  • Comment on: London 'superhub' given green light

    Richard Annett's comment 6 November, 2015 10:38 pm

London should be decentralising. It is too big. For many another big hub is strategically the wrong way to go. no water poor power infrastructure, over congested roads, high property prices.......this is just going to make things worse.
.....Just feeling a bit negative this pm! :)

Colin, you make sound so ethical, but the material produced is still radioactive for how long....and where are you going to put it for 10,000 years, who is going to monitor it? What happens when the containment fails? Is it insurable, (no)? what are you going to do with the reactor? spend several billion pulling it apart...who will pay for that? ?Us or GE Hitachi? And if they go bust or sell of to another company that goes bust who picks up the threads.....oh yeah, the tax payer again...
Nice try but you don't impress anyone!
As for footprint, will your rig help to reduce tidal surges and north winds to help prevent london form flooding? No. But the offshore rigs do. Do offshore rigs have more jobs associated with them? Yes they do. Do they cost a fraction of decommissioning a nuclear genset to decommission. Yes they do. Can you recylce all the steel? Yes you can. Can't recycle much of nuclear station can you untill it loses it radioactivity.
