Revamped dining society urges all to eat, drink and be merry

THE ICE'S remodelled dining society, now open to all members, kicks off on 19 October.

The first dinner of the Civils Dining Society will be held after the ICE/RIBA annual lecture.

Professor George Fleming said that the aim of the £25 a head dinners would be to encourage members of all grades to meet and exchange views. Supervising Civil Engineers would be encouraged to bring along graduate members they are training. All members would be encouraged to bring partners and friends.

Senior vice president Professor Fleming, who conceived the idea and drove it through Council, said he was hopeful of arresting flagging numbers for ICE social events. He said: 'A century ago 3,000 people used to attend our Conversazione out of a membership of 7,100. A century later we are lucky if we can get 200 for ICE events. We want as many people as possible to come along to these dinners because social contact is fundamental to this institution.'

Cost of membership of the Civils Dining Society is £10 but free for students. Six dinners are expected to be held over the next year.
