BBRP is actively engaged in research and development. As well as developing computer and IT technology to speed up the design process, it has recently developed a completely new slab track rail system at its Derby development facility (right).

The simple, low maintenance system that is suitable for high speed and heavy load trains has been designed completely by Balfour Beatty engineers and is currently being trialled at a test track in Spain. The system offers increased safety and performance, increased axle load capacity and better ride quality, ' says special track systems manager at BBRP Vernon Turnbull, who is hoping that the successful trials will lead to the first operational use of the system.
