NCE's research took place between May and October. The first stage involved holding four focus groups in London, Manchester and Glasgow.
Each group consisted of approximately a dozen engineers classified both by age (over and under 35) and by role (contractors and consultants or clients). Weaknesses in the sample were tackled by a series of one to one interviews. The next stage of the research was delivered through a detailed questionnaire completed by around 1200 student and working civil engineers.
Finally, the focus group approach was repeated with five meetings held in the North West, West Midlands and the South East.
