Why don't more British contractors work abroad?

Your question "Why don't more Brirtish contractors work abroad?" is incredibly naive! In Asia at least, in my experience, it is all about corruption. On a particular £120 million contract where I was working as a client project manager, I learnt from a client colleague (after many beers) that the successful contractor paid 13.1% to the client on bribes. It was that precise!!!!!I regret to say I didn't get a bean out of it and quite right too. But you'll never see British contractors in that sort of market. Plenty of French, Italian and Germans and Japanese of course - what a suprise!
