Preliminary work on the focal point of Redcar’s seafront regeneration scheme, a 26m tall vertical pier, is set to get underway next week.
Main contractor Willmott Dixon will start clearing the site for construction of the vertical pier, ready for the main work to start in October. The new £30M structure will feature a rooftop viewing platform, studio space and a cafe.
Work on the new pier is part of a wider £21M scheme to improve coastal defences at Redcar, which is being undertaken by Birse Civils for the Environment Agency. The new 2.7km long seawalls will feature wave deflection to help protect the town from the predicted 850mm sea level rises over the next 100 years.
Birse was awarded the coastal defence contract, which includes improvements to the promenade, in February and the work is expected to take two years.
