Recommendations of a Highways Agency report ignored

The South West Regional Assembly has ignored the recommendations of a Highways Agency report and voted to widen the A303 and A30 through the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Assembly voted 42 to 41 in favour of the Blackdown Hills widening over the option to make improvements to the A358 from Ilminster to Taunton.

Businesses in Somerset had campaigned for the A358 option, which is more cost effective and far less environmentally sensitive, but they were out voted by business interests in Devon and Cornwall.
