KELLER GROUND Engineering recently installed 12,000 driven piles in the first 11 weeks of a contract for a new distribution centre in South Wales.
A total of 14,000, predominantly 380mm diameter driven cast insitu piles were installed to support the frame and floor slab for the 80,000m
2structure for retail company Wilkinson at Magor, east of Newport.
Piles were driven down to 15m through deep layers of soft alluvium and peat overlying gravel and mudstone and incorporate Keller's special enlarged head detail.
Each has a 1m diameter flat topped conical head which saves time and money by eliminating the need for pile head trimming and reducing slab punching shear, according to Keller.
Due to open in September, th e distribution centre will serve the firm's stores in the south of England and Wales and is modelled on a similar facility at Worksop.
