Raising the riverbank

Around 1,000m2 of Colbond's new geosynthetic Enkagrid PRO 40 has been used on a flood protection scheme in France.

For many years the authorities of Chaumont region have been wrestling with the problems of high water levels on the River Chaumont.

One important link road near a forest flooded every year, notably a one 800m stretch where the river bank was lower than the norm. A decision was taken to increase the height of the river bank.

The newly raised riverbank has been reinforced with a layer of Enkagrid PRO 40 to prevent displacement at the toe and ensure its internal stability. At the same time it has been given erosion protection with a layer of Enkamat.

For a long time, stiff, extruded (monolith) geogrids and flexible, woven (yarn-based) products (coated fabrics) were the two main categories of geogrids available for construction and maintenance purposes in the soil reinforcement market. Colbond Geosynthetics set out to combine the material characteristics of high stiffness and rigid junctions - knots - of monolith grids with the low-creep and high flexibility of yarn-based products.

Intensive research and independent testing have resulted in the new strip grids, instantly recognisable by their precision-manufactured, high- tensile, extruded polymer strips, which provide high integrity and cost effective performance.

A unique, patented laser-welding technique developed in-house outperforms thermal and adhesive options, and enables proper connection of the strips without losing any material properties such as orientation and strength.

The Enkagrid range provides reinforcement for all soil structures. Enkagrid PRO is a uniaxial geogrid of extruded polyester strips, available in five strengths: 40kM/m, 60kN/m, 90kN/m, 120kN/m and 180kN/m.

Enkagrid MAX is a biaxial geogrid of extruded polypropylene strips, available in three strengths - 20kN/m, 30kN/m and 40kN/m - in both directions. The double-weft, laser-bonded structure makes for rigid junctions with consistent stress-strain performance throughout the matrix.

Finally, Enkagrid TRC is a high-modulus, multifunctional geogrid composite, available in 20kN/m, 30kN/m and 40kN/m strengths, in longitudinal and transverse directions.

Enkagrid TRC offers reinforcement, separation and filtration in one product, the result of Twaron aramid fibres embedded in a Colback polyester non woven. Enkagrid TRC reduces sub-base thickness and increases road life, providing excellent reinforcement for roads, parking areas and platforms.
