Rail tips from Indian experience


During the five years that I was responsible for metre gauge track maintenance on one of the former State Railways of India I never experienced a cracked rail. Maximum speeds were around 100km/hr and horizontal curves were generally flatter than those in the UK.

Cracked rails are structural failures and the remedy could well be to increase the unit weight of the rails, improve the structural design of the cross section or optimise superelevation on curves - or all three.
