RAIL REUNION: A German tradition was revived last month, with the return of the ICE German branch site visit after a break of five years. The visit, organised by country representative Hamish Douglas, saw 20 engineers from across Germany descend on the Danube city of Ingolstadt to visit a challenging 1,970m section of the new German Railways north-south high speed line.

Technical difficulties on the 2km stretch include a 1,140m of cut and cover Audi tunnel, named after the adjacent car plant, which needed compressed air to overcome groundwater problems. The new Danube Bridge also needed special approval for use on German Railways.
