Race to save Budapest metro

Major city centre flooding was averted in the Hungarian capital Budapest. Workers surrounded ventilation shafts of the city's metro, while sandbagging across staircases along the Danube flood walls held out river water which rose by 8.6m, threatening to engulf the historic Chain Bridge. The worst flooding has occurred in villages outside the capital, some of which have seen road closures.
