Quarter of HS2 staff paid over £100K

One in four of High Speed 2 (HS2) employees are paid over £100,000, according to a Freedom of Information request.

The request, published by The Times, revealed that 318 people out of 1,346 HS2 employees are earning at least £100,000 in salary and perks.

The paper said that the number had doubled since the 2015/16 figure was released and stood at 155.

It also said around 112 employees received more than £150,000 and 15 of those pocket more than £251,000.

The figures include salaries, bonuses and pension contributions.

HS2 has been blighted by stories of cost overruns in recent months. In June this year, it was revealed by New Civil Engineer that the initial cost estimates for the main civils works packages were coming in around £1bn over budget.

New Civil Engineer also revealed that the notice to proceed – the notice to start construction - had been pushed back by eight months to allow the contractors to cut costs on the project.

An HS2 Ltd spokesperson said: “In a highly technical project of the scale and complexity of HS2 it is necessary to employ the right level of expertise and knowledge to deliver the programme successfully.

“As the project moves increasingly towards construction, as does our need for highly technical support increase.

“HS2 Ltd is committed to controlling costs and take our responsibility to taxpayers money very seriously, and the programme remains on track and within our funding envelope.”

    I would be interested to know how many of these highly-paid staff (if any) are professionally qualified engineers!

  • HS2 is just paying the market rate for engineers unlike the Nuclear Industry which is struggling with inexperienced engineers and contractors.
    The first rule you learn if you want to make a good living from engineering is not to work for someone who makes a living selling your time for profit. HS2 is a rail company and not a consultant or engineering house and values people differently.

  • Agree with Stephen's reasoning, but then not so sure that 1,346 employees are needed for not being a "consultant or engineering house".
