Pro-bypass lobbyists in the Lincolnshire city of Boston have sensationally taken control of the local borough council in last week's elections. The Boston Bypass Independents gained 25 seats out of 32, with Labour completely wiped out.
The bypass group clearly galvanised the electorate, with turnout up to 37% from 28% in 2003.
Plans for a bypass around the historic market town were killed off last year by Lincolnshire County Council which concluded that the scheme would fail to win funds from the Department for Transport.
