Porr wins Swiss scenic railway tunnel contract

Scenic rail operator Rhaetian Railway has appointed a joint venture of Porr Suisse, Walo Bertschinger and Società Italiana per Condotte d’acqua to undertake construction on a technically demanding rail tunnel project in Switzerland.

The new CHF125M (£85M) Albula Tunnel will replace an existing 100 year old rail tunnel that was deemed too expensive to overhaul and to ensure rail services are not disrupted during the four year construction programme.

Work on site is expected to start in April with boring work on the 5.8km tunnel completed by December 2017. The new route is scheduled to open in August 2019.

“Albula Tunnel II will be built at 1,800m above sea level and is technically demanding because of the geology of the area,” said Porr CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss.
