Populous wins China stadium bid

Design firm Populous, the company behind Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and Skilled Park on Australia’s Gold Coast, has won a contract to build a major sports development in China.

The new project, set for the historic city of Datong, near Beijing in northern China, will feature a 30,000-seat stadium and an 8,000-seat arena.

Queensland treasurer Andrew Fraser said the development was part of a larger drive by Datong’s mayor to regenerate the city.

Populous spokesman Paul Henry said: “We have found that China values sporting venues as gathering places for modern communities, which also reflect the unique qualities of a particular city.

“Datong was a military stronghold for several dynasties, so the architecture of the new sports park features themes of strength and fortitude, while reflecting the numerous ethnic communities that built a resilient northern China.

“The design also aims to reflect the city’s heritage, and its modern economic role in mining and finance, and the surrounding natural mountainous landscape.”
