Pisa gets funding

THE 10th anniversary of the closure to the public of Italy's famous leaning tower of Pisa was this week celebrated with confirmation of funding to enable the stabilisation work to be completed by the end of the year.

The work, being masterminded by Professor John Burland of London's Imperial College, should enable the public to climb the tower by the middle of 2001.
