Picture story: Foundations work underway on £20M station revamp

Refurbishment of Northampton railway station has started, with work on the building’s foundation piles now underway.

At twice the size of the present station, the 2,500m2 building will offer greater capacity and improved facilities, including shops, cafés and waiting areas.

Located in the Northampton Enterprise Zone, the £20M development aims to support continued economic growth in the town.

Funding for the transformation was secured in May 2012.

Principal contractor for the station building is Buckingham Group, lead consultant and structural engineer is SKM and architect is Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher.

Central government is contributing £10M of the £20M budget, with the remainder being met by Network Rail and Northamptonshire County Council. The new station is due to open in the autumn of 2014.
