Pick of the programs

GE summarises new and updated entries in the Geotechnical and Geoenv ironmental Software Directory.

The Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Software Directory (GGSD), established in February 1996 by Mott MacDonald's Tim Spink, provides the most comprehensive listing of geotechnical/geoenvironmental software available.

The directory (www.ggsd.com) is revised every two months.Here we summarise updates and new entries in the geotechnical category since February and Spink reviews the pick of the new entries.

The GGSD lists 1,288 programs, 772 suppliers and publishers, and 33 www links. It catalogues programs into geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, engineering geology, foundation engineering, hydrogeology, geoenvironmental engineering, environmental engineering, data analysis and data visualisation.

In November 1999 the directory received its millionth page hit and is now clocking up 140,000 hits a month from 7,100 visitors a month. Visitors come from more than 100 countries, with about a third from North America and a third from Western Europe.

Spink's selection of some of the more interesting developments come with a disclaimer.

'The programs are ones that caught my eye as being useful, interesting, or different, ' he says. 'I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be 'new' programs, but their entry in GGSD is new.'

Bearing capacity - Foundation pad analysis A virtually free shareware Excel worksheet for designing shallow pad foundations for lighting tower bases and sign bases. It can handle inclined loads, and determines bearing capacity of the base, sliding and overturning stability. It provides a graph of pad length to meet a range of allowable bearing pressures.

There is an option to use a central driven pile to provide extra sliding and overturning capacity.

Drainage - Soakaway Design For designing soakaways to BRE 365 guidelines.

Dynamics (soil-structure interaction) - SASSI2000 One of the new generation of programs that runs in your web browser, over the internet. It is a collection of programs for the analysis of dynamic soil-structure interaction problems in 2D or 3D. The flexible volume and subtraction methods of analysis are used; formulated in the frequency domain using the complex response method and the finite element technique.

Insitu testing - GGU-PLOAD This program is used for the analysis and presentation of plate loading tests carried out in accordance with DIN 18134.

Instrumentation - DamSmart A geotechnical instrumentation database that can be configured for practically any type of instrument. Readings can be imported from various data loggers or entered manually. Data is manipulated by user-defined equations, and the data scanned for allowable ranges and thresholds.

Laboratory testing (soil) - GGU-GSD The program produces grain-size distribution curves from the raw laboratory data for tests carried out according to DIN 18123. It also uses various empirical relationships to derive other material properties such as filter criteria, permeability, frost resistance and angle of friction.

Numerical analysis (rock) - RocSupport A tool for assisting with the design of tunnel support systems for circular excavations in weak rock. Given the excavation radius, in-situ stress conditions, rock parameters and support parameters, the program can perform either a deterministic or probabilistic analysis to find the corresponding factor of safety or probability of failure and to assess deformations. Rock bolt, steel set and shotcrete support can be modelled.

Retaining wall design - SPOOKS A retaining wall design program from the Danish Geotechnical Institute. It can analyse anchored walls, staggered walls, soldier piles, diaphragm walls and secant pile walls using Brinch Hansen's theory or the Free Earth Support principle. It can handle multi-level bracing, sloping surfaces, additional pressure diagrams and partial surcharge loads. All external loads and ground properties may have partial safety factors applied.

Settlement analysis - FSConsol A one-dimensional consolidation program based on the Finite Strain Consolidation Theory that describes consolidation problems which involve large strains and non-linear soil properties. It can model a variety of consolidation problems. It also tracks density, void ratio, excess pore pressure and dissipation profiles with time.

Slope stability (soil) - Slide Rewritten for Windows, Slide is a 2-D slope stability analysis program combining a CADbased graphical interface with a range of modelling and data interpretation options. It calculates safety factors for circular and noncircular slope failures by a variety of methods.

Ground anchors, geotextile reinforcement and soil nails can be modelled.
