Physical defences

Physical defences around British Army bases in Iraq are to be beefed up by the deployment of around 170 Royal Engineers to the region.

Defence secretary Geoff Hoon said the move will help counter the increased threat posed by violent groups around Al Amarah. These have involved mortar and rocket attacks on UK bases. Engineers from 69 Squadron of 36 Regiment Royal Engineers will spend three months in the region.

Renewable energy development, the opening of wholesale electricity to full competition and fuel poverty among consumers will be key issues for Ofgem's new Scotland associate director, Charles Gallacher. The appointment for the role, beefing up Ofgem's presence north of the border, was announced this week.
