I refer to the photographs of Dubai on the cover of NCE 21 April. I agree the development of Dubai has been quite phenomenal over the last 30 years but it has not all happened in the last 13 years as the inset photo giving a date of 1992 suggests!

I lived in Dubai from 19771983, 1989 and 1995-2000, when I worked on the construction of the Dubai Aluminium Smelter (DUBAL). The photo was taken from the top of the Trade Centre building looking up the Abu Dhabi road towards the second group of buildings on the Defence Roundabout.

The three blocks in the left foreground are the Trade Centre apartments (in which I lived in 1983). Both the Trade Centre and its apartments were built by Sunley and were completed at the end of 1978. I suggest your photo is of similar vintage. By 1992 many buildings were constructed either side of the Abu Dhabi road.

Thank you for an extremely interesting article on Dubai and the contents and sentiments expressed, with which I entirely agree. I am only a builder (! ) and not a member of your august institution, but I am regularly supplied with your magazine by one of your members, and I thoroughly enjoy it.
