Perfect Squint

The Finnieston Bridge in Glasgow saw off tough competition to win the 2007 Saltire award for Civil engineering, announced in Edinburgh last month.

More commonly known as the Clyde Arc or 'squinty bridge' (as the road runs askew to the arch, taking a oblique path across the Clyde), the Finnieston bridge has become a city icon since its completion in 2006.

The Saltire judges said it "demonstrated excellence in concept, design and construction and has become a symbol for the regeneration of the Clyde banks area".

Outgoing chairman of the Saltire judging panel, John Carruthers, said the squinty bridge was the right choice because it is such an iconic structure and will draw people to civil engineering.

"It is an exceptional project – no question. But we have to generate interest, particularly amongst youngsters. We have to keep engineers in the profession, and out of accountancy and management consultancies."

He added that the bridge was such an iconic structure that they gave it a particularly hard time in the judging, but it still emerged on top.
Speaking at his last major official event before handing over to David Orr, ICE president Quentin Leiper addressed the cream of Scotland's civil engineering community with a rousing speech.

"Climate change is our biggest challenge," he said. "According to Sir Nicholas Stern, global warming could cause an economic depression bigger than that of the 1930s."

The role of civil engineers would be, he said, vital in dealing with climate change. Sustainability should be part and parcel of the business strategy and culture of civil engineers.

Orr outlined a five-point plan to keep sustainability on the agenda:
- to understand why we have to be sustainable;
- to energise and enthuse your team;
- to give guidance;
- to demonstrate leadership
- to recognise success

"We need to be out there, enthusing about what we have seen here. We all must speak to and encourage others to follow in your path, in order to help the profession fulfil its obligations to society," he said.
