Pennine has developed and patented a low noise rotary displacement pile, Penpile, which is said to combine the low noise and low vibration advantages of vibro concrete columns with the versatility of continuous flight auger piling.
Unusually, Pennine has approached the rotary displacement market from a vibro-compaction perspective, resulting in a subtle difference between its system and others already on the market.
It uses a patented boring tool which displaces soil laterally as it bores into the ground.The unique part is in the execution.Pennine's system uses stiff low slump concrete combined with high pumping pressures. Slightly withdrawing and reinserting the drilling tool at the pile base causes it to bulge, increasing bearing capacity. Trials to date in granular soils have proven successful.
Trials are continuing with clay toes, and recent test results on sites in St Helens and Colchester were 'very promising' said Pennine technical manager Marc Evans.
As with other rotary displacement systems only small amounts of spoil are generated, making the system suitable for contaminated sites. As the boring action causes little vibration compared to vibro-compaction, it is alsobetter suited for use in urban locations.
Pennine has also become the first member of the Federation of Piling Specialists to achieve ISO14001 standard for environmental management.
