Your editorial on the failure to link the gaining of chartered status to increases in salary (NCE 4 May) rang a distant bell.

I treasure the glowing letter I received from a former - but not atypical - employer in the 1970s when I became a chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

'Congratulations on passing your professional interview, ' it said. 'Your staff records have been amended accordingly.'

I expect things are different now.
