Partial collapse of bridge over Po River, Italy

A bridge has partially collapsed across Italy’s River Po near Piacenza, south of Milan, with four injuries reported, one of which is ‘serious’.

Four cars were said to have been crossing the bridge when a pillar collapsed.

The area is already under alert due to severe flooding, and thousands have been evacuated from the area.

The level of the river was already some 2.3m above the emergency level according to the ANSA news agency.

Emergency rescuers are heading towards the scene.

Piacenza is 66km south of Milan.
