Papering over the lack of maintenance


The tragic rail crash at Hatfield highlighted one of the features of our QA culture.

Within hours of the accident Railtrack was able to pinpoint the maintenance record of the track concerned and dozens of other similar lengths of track.

Such instant access to records is commendable but the awful truth is that, for whatever reason, while the paperwork was up to date, the actual work on the ground was not.

I sometimes feel that there is a tendency to think that if all the paperwork is done that is the end of the story - it is not.
