Pan-European gas pipeline Nord Stream comes online

The first of the twin 1,224km Nord Stream pipelines linking Germany and Russia under the Baltic Sea came online yesterday.

German federal chancellor Angela Merkel and Russia’s president Dmitry Medvedev opened the €7.4bn (£6.3bn) pipeline which will be fully operational in late 2012.

The two lines will have the capacity to transport 55bn.m³ of Russian gas a year to the EU for at least 50 years.

Nord Stream’s five shareholders are Gazprom, BASF/Wintershall, E.ON Ruhrgas, Nederlandse Gasunie and GDF SUEZ
