Over the Churchill

Your fine campaign and Jeremy Clarkson's presentation for Isambard Kingdom Brunel deserves the memberships' thanks. If the poll is repeated in 100 years the 'Brunel Effect' would be much greater and, (no sour grapes here), we all know Brunel would win!

The BBC presented Churchill last so as to maintain stimulation in the contest, otherwise fearing an early run away result in his favour. The giant of WW2 memory with the unassailable gratitude of the nation made it impossible for Brunel to win.

As IKB is not central to the national curriculum he suffered from an historical fog of time.

But significantly, he came head and shoulders above all other figures.

Brunel has given the Institution the opportunity to maintain the awareness the nation has had for a short time regarding our profession. Can we use Brunel to foster interest in the next generation of wouldbe civil engineers?
