The carbon market has been gaining momentum since ratification of the Kyoto Protocol in 2005, and the carbon market is incentivising new greenhouse gas reduction projects worldwide.

Low-carbon projects, principally in developing countries, are able to sell carbon "credits" on the carbon market. Companies struggling to meet mandatory carbon reduction targets are able to buy these credits to offset their CO2 excess.
