On the spot

Name: Steve Guest

Position: Site-based assistant technical director, High-Point Rendel.

Qualifications: Chartered civil engineer, geotechnical specialist

Age: 49

Best job : The last one. Stabilising Scarborough hillside after the dramatic collapse into the sea of clifftop Holbeck Hall hotel. 'It was challenging, high profile and constantly scrutinised by an active local press that had nothing else to write about.'

Best part of this job: Working in beautiful part of Yorkshire. 'I thought my site-based days were over, but you cannot run a job of this complexity from behind a desk in London.'

... and the worst: First stress of the day, avoiding somnolent sheep and pheasants during 6am drive to work across North York Moors from temporary weekday home, Ivy Cottage. 'Somewhat different from my usual commute from home in Greenwich to Southwark Street London office.'

Most looking forward to: Joining his wife wintering three months in Mauritius, 'just as soon as I can get away from this job. My first real break for years.'
