On the spot

Name: Barry Blake.

Age: 41.

Qualifications: HNC Civil Engineering, Westminster Technical College.

Career: Started with the Greater London Council in 1976, working in various divisions of the chief engineer's department before joining CAD vendor Computervision as a construction support consultant in 1984. I joined ECL as a sales executive in 1987 and have been sales director since 1993.

Career highlight: Seeing and managing our PDS suite from nil customers to market leader in 10 years against well established competition.

Advice to young engineers: Embrace the latest technology but never discard the basic principles of engineering design used to create it and never take for granted the results produced by computer software.

Anything else: I used to be an avid collector of cars with character including a Chevrolet Corvette, a Triumph Stag and an MGB GT but have given that up to pay for the joys of fatherhood.
