On a crest of a wave

Letters to the editor

Your article 'Water firms behind in Y2K compliancy' (NCE 25 February) painted a misleading picture of the UK water industry's current position on the Millennium Bug preparations. We are not behind - far from it in fact.

We may have been in August last year, the period the National Audit Office report referred to. But now we are right up with the pack and, in some areas, leading it. For example, our national water industry co- operation deal.

Industry regulator Ofwat also says the English and Welsh industry will be rated 'blue' by July - that means no material risk of disruption from any Year 2000 problems. And we are absolutely on target to meet that. Both Ofwat and Action 2000 will support that claim.

Adrian Beeby, director of communication, Water UK, 1 Queen Anne's Gate, London SW1H 9BT.
