German contractor Pfeifer this week hoisted the London 2012 Velodrome roof into place, signalling completion of one of the biggest lifts of its kind in the UK.
Completion of the roof lift also means the cycling arena is on track to become the first Olympic Park venue to be completed when work finishes in early 2011.
Olympic Delivery Authority chief executive David Higgins said the lift was a “huge engineering challenge”.
The double curved cablenet roof weighs around half that of most other covered velodromes at 30kg/m2 compared to 65kg/m2 for the Beijing Velodrome.
An “engineering challenge”
Measuring 5,000m2 in size and using 16km of cabling, the roof is joined to the steel structure, which rises in height by 12m from the shallowest point to the highest part of the structure. This forms the distinct double-curved shape that has been designed to reflect the geometry of the cycling track.
The lift took eight weeks to complete and work will begin shortly to cover the roof and install the outer timber cladding.
The structure is due to be watertight in the summer, allowing installation of the timber cycling track to begin in the autumn.
At the Olympic Stadium, 14 light towers − each weighing 34t − have been lifted into place over the past three weeks.
Preparatory works on the stadium roof will commence this week, with actual works starting in a few weeks time.
