Olympic stadium roof unveiled

The design of the new London 2012 Olympic stadium roof has been revealed.

The main permanent element of the structure consists of a bowl built from inclined steel beams which support the concrete seating terraces.
On top of the terraces is a temporary, demountable structure which can accommodate 55,000 seats. This is covered by a fabric membrane roof. The roof will be held up by a steel compression ring that will be reduced in size after the games to sit on top of the permanent structure.
