Off their trolley

Yet again I read of another tramway scheme being either cancelled, or cut back, because of anticipated excessive costs.

If we want to benefit from the reduced street pollution, greater reliability, safety and comfort that tramways provide over conventional diesel buses, then we should propose alternative schemes using modern trolley buses.

Anyone who has seen and used a trolley bus system will appreciate the silence, cleanliness, comfort and speed they provide as well as the lack of street pollution.

For some critics, the main disadvantage is the need for the vehicles to be steered, but if this were essential in certain areas, it could be overcome using the 'bus-guidance' principles already established.

So come on! Let's have this alternative tabled and considered before total cancellation of these schemes.

The opening dates may still be met!
