ODA puts bridgework out to tender

London 2012’s latest package of bridge work was put out to tender by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) last week.

The Wetlands Area Bridges package comprises the construction of two permanent footbridges over the River Lea and a single permanent footbridge over the Channelsea River, together with the design and construction of temporary bridges adjacent to the permanent bridges.

All the bridges are located within the northern area of the Olympic Park in Stratford, London.

The package is the fifth of seven structures, bridges and highways packages of work to be put out to tender by the ODA, with a short list likely to be drawn up in spring 2008, followed by a contract award next summer.

Shortlists for the first four packages were revealed in July:

- Balfour Beatty, Costain and Skanska are battling it out for Lot 1 – the Olympic Park North Area Roads and Bridges contract that covers 5km of roads, two land bridges, one road bridge, two underpasses and retaining walls.

- Alfred McAlpine, Amec, Balfour Beatty and Edmund Nuttall are all in the running for
Lot 2 – South Area Roads and Bridges – includes approximately 3km of loop roads, four road bridges, one footbridge, and retaining walls.

- Balfour Beatty again, along with Hochtief, Morgan Est and Norwest Holst are bidding
for Lot 3, the Rail Over-Bridges package.

- The Main Stadium Area Bridges (Lot 4) includes one road bridge and five footbridges has a short list of Balfour Beatty, Edmund Nuttall, Fitzpatrick, Kier and Sir Robert McAlpine.

The appointment of a successful contractor for the first four lots is expected early next year, preceded by the final two packages, which will be going out to tender by the end of 2007.

Judging of a design competition for a 26m-span footbridge over Carpenters Lock on the River Lea Waterway starts next week.

The ODA is expected to announce the winning team next month.
