Ocon wins Liverpool student housing contract

Ocon Construction has won a £5M contract to build a five storey student accommodation block in Liverpool.

The 100 bedroom scheme will take the place of a pub, shops and bedsits on London Road, one of the main routes into the city, and is due to be finished in time for the 2011 student intake.

Existing properties at 114 to 126 London Road are already being torn down by Manchester based Ocon, which will create retail and office space on the new building’s ground floor.

Architects Lewis & Hickey designed the project to incorporate a neighbouring building of special historical interest, 128 London Road, which will remain standing and be refurbished into a management suite and two two-bedroom apartments.

Ocon managing director Andy Barker said: “Our involvement in this prestigious new scheme once again demonstrates that Ocon is at the forefront of the student accommodation sector, with an enviable reputation for delivering projects to programme and on budget.

“This is the latest in a number of student accommodation schemes currently on site, including projects that Ocon is building in Loughborough, Exeter, Dundee and Sussex.”
