Joseph Cabrera

Head of Leeds University's civil engineering materials unit Professor Joseph Cabrera has died aged 66.

Cabrera was born in Bolivia and rose to become the head of construction with the Bolivian Development Corporation. During this time he designed La Paz airport's runway, the longest in the world at 6km and the highest, constructed at an altitude of 4,300m.

He arrived in the UK at the age of 33 and soon began lecturing at Leeds. By the early nineties he had become a reader in civil engineering materials and in 1992 he organised and led Civil Engineering Materials United - a research centre dedicated to the advancement of concrete science and technology.

John Stothard

One of the stalwarts of the ICE's Professional Review process, John Stothard has died aged 64. Stothard was a Reviewer for many years and after taking early retirement from his post as Deputy County Surveyor with South Yorkshire Council he played a significant part in the re-organisation of the review process.
