CleverClogs Grand final - Last year's CleverClogs maths competitions culminated in a dazzling display of mental agility at the grand final.

MATHS SUPREMOS gathered at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers just before Christmas to do battle for the overall title of NCE CleverClogs champion 2004.

Ben Gibson from Mouchel Parkman was crowned winner in the individual category after a very close battle with runner up Barry Johnson - just a single point separated them after 12 rounds of questions.

In the team competition the Vehicle Design Group from Ove Arup - made up from Neil Butcher, Richard Brookes and Peter Young - stormed through to collect the title.

The standard of competition was astounding, with the audience of supporters and well-wishers silenced by the speed and accuracy of the mental arithmetic on display.

Each nalist was a winner of one of the year's three terms.

Over 1,000 individuals and 140 teams took part in the competition throughout the year, making this live event without question the toughest of challenges.

Questions in the grand final were set by CleverClogs question-master and NCE editor Antony Oliver, and followed the format and style of those set in the magazine over the previous nine months.

However, as an additional challenge, two rounds of hydraulics-based questions were also added to test the finalists, set by drainage specialist and competition sponsor ACO Technologies.

The winners were presented with specially created trophies, as well as prizes of flights and a holiday in the US. The winning team also walked away with a £3,000 bursary to assist a student of their choice through university.

Presenting the prizes, ACO Technologies marketing manager Peter Ridgway praised all the competitors for taking part in the competition over the three terms.

'The talent we have seen today demonstrates the depth of mathematics and technical ability available in our industry, ' said Ridgway. 'We should be proud of this asset and make great use of it in our businesses.'
