In reading the summary of the ICE and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) detailing the implications of convergence (NCE last week), I was interested to note that although the two bodies have roughly the same membership, IMechE has about half the staff, and therefore members pay a much smaller subscription.

It seems, however, that they provide very similar services.

If the IMechE can do it, why does the ICE need so many staff? Perhaps if the two institutions were merged we should follow their lead and bring our fees down to theirs, and staff down accordingly.
