Northern Counties lifts association golf trophy

NORTHERN COUNTIES association has broken Yorkshire association's three year reign as golf champion of the north, by winning the Northern Associations Golf Trophy 2001 at Penrith last month.

Teams of nine players from Yorkshire, Northern Counties, North Western, Glasgow & West of Scotland, and East of Scotland local associations all battled to overcome the course and the elements. But it was Northern Counties (294) which stood strong to see off challenges from Glasgow (287) and North Western (280).

Defending champion Yorkshire had to settle for fourth place with East of Scotland, ICE local association national champion in 2000, trailing home in last place. East of Scotland defends its national prize, the Thomas Telford trophy, at Prestwick on 3 September.

Northern Counties' Alan Robinson also took the Travers Morgan Loving Cup for best individual score.

The tournament was sponsored by Symonds Travers Morgan, Halcrow Crouch, East of Scotland Water, KMN Consultants and Griffiths & Armour.
