Newt kids on the block

Andrew Dawson's letter (NCE 10/17 August) mentions the erection of special fences to protect rare great crested newts in ponds beside a proposed bypass. Three years ago, at the public inquiry, the Highways Agency stated there were no newts on the proposed route.

This could be so.

In 1987 I worked on an organic gardening project and there was one individual who took it on himself to move crested newts to sites of proposed bypasses and motorways. Totally illegal of course but the newts did not seem to mind.
