Four consortiums have prequalified for London Underground’s (LU’s) £600M Northern Line Extension to Battersea and Nine Elms, NCE has learned.
They are Balfour Beatty/Bam; Bechtel/Strabag; Costain/Murphy; and Laing O’Rourke/Ferrovial.
The extension will comprise 5.2m internal diameter twin bore tunnels running for 3.3km with stations at Battersea and Nine Elms.
LU had said it wanted the prequalified contractors to bring innovative ideas to deliver significant cost, risk and programme savings.
In its Official Journal of the European Union procurement notice, the Tube operator said it would use a negotiated procedure to select the winning bidder.
Design has progressed beyond the concept stage and the winning consortium will be expected to fine-tune these plans.
Meanwhile Transport for London (TfL) is taking charge of the planning process, and last month submitted a Transport & Works Act Order application for the work.
This marked the start of a seven week period during which people and organisations can express their views about the project to the government. TfL has said that following the three consultations already carried out it believes public support for the extension is strong.
The scheme will be privately financed by developers of the Battersea power station and Nine Elms redevelopment sites and is underpinned by a government guarantee worth up to £1bn. This was confirmed by chancellor George Osborne in last month’s Spending Round 2013.
The construction contract is due to be signed on 6 January and project completion is scheduled for the end of 2019.
