Three consortia were this week awarded a total of £6m by the shadow Strategic Rail Authority in a freight awards competition. This aims to encourage new ideas to help development of the rail freight industry. The winning consortium of Blue Circle industries, Metalair Feldbinder and Babcock Rail won £2.9M for its two year trial to demonstrate the use of a piggyback system.

A Mott MacDonald-led consortium has won a two year Environment Agency contract for monitoring waste regulation in the Thames region.

The Health & Safety Commission has announced the first ever UK targets to reduce work-related deaths, ill health and injury. The targets are to reduce working days lost from work related injury and ill health by 30%; work-related ill health by 20% and fatal and major injury accidents by 10%.
