Balfour Beatty is expanding its £400M US activities with the purchase of two rail trackwork contractors for £31.5M. Both Marta Track Constructors and Metroplex Corporation work around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Combined turnover is £25M and profit £4M. Current order book for the two is around £100M.

Guidelines for transport assessments used to evaluate planning proposals are to be developed by Steer Davies Gleave with Llewelyn Davies and Harrison Webb. They will replace traffic impact assessments, allowing better assessment of integrated transport schemes. The project is for the Department of the Environment Transport and the Regions.

Water regulator Ofwat's programme for the next 12 months will involve close monitoring of water company performance in relation to new price limits set by the regulator last November. Regulator Ian Byatt said the programme for 2000-2001 would also examine ways to develop competition in the industry as required by the 1998 Competition Act.
