Avon & Somerset police are considering whether to press manslaughter charges against seven people arrested in connection with the collapse of a gantry on Avonmouth bridge last year in which four people died (NCE 16 September 1999). The HSE is considering separate prosecutions under the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974.

The Rail Freight Group has slammed the Government's decision to allow 44-tonne lorries on to UK roads from 1 January 2002. Chairman Lord Berkeley claimed the Government had reneged on its pledge to 'give the railways the chance to develop the heavy load market'.
