The ICE has marked the launch of the first two 'Eurocode' international construction design standards by publishing a specially commissioned issue of its Civil Engineering journal (vol.144, si2). Written by leading members of the international drafting teams, the issue explains how the professional lives of practising engineers worldwide will be fundamentally changed by the approaching suite of 10 structural Eurocodes. Summaries of all papers can be read at www. thomastelford. com/jol.

The observational method - a process by which excavations are supported according to how much the ground is seen to move - has enabled the first phase of Copenhagen's £550M new metro project to get back on schedule for its planned opening in 2002. The work is described in detail in the latest issue (vol 149, no 4) of the ICE/BGA Geotechnical Engineering journal. Summaries of this, and all other papers, are on www. geotechnical journal. com.
